Tea Bowl Series, 2017-2018

Tea bowl series was inspired by the catalog of the Raku family tea bowl show in Kyoto. I was seeking calm after intense boundary exploration in my last series. With the tea bowl I found an image that symbolized the open mind.

“The emptiness inside holds whatever we want.”

I tried to capture the essence of the bowls while painting them. I was attracted to the asymmetry and flaws, and the surprising textures created by the Raku firing process. There was a progression of imagery starting with the open bowl. Next, birds and flowers floated above. Good omens.

Then my mother went into hospice care. She came into the bowl… all her favorite things floating in her life soup. Then a strong flame representing her life energy. A way of honoring her life.

Tea bowl series includes 83 paintings done primarily in Gouache and Acrylic. Also a handmade artbook.
